Description

Our Beekeeping Experience event is a hands-on experience that allows you to learn about bees, beekeeping, and the vital role bees play in the environment. Sessions run from Spring to Autumn, and are weather-dependent. The start time is 12 pm, each experience lasts for 1 hour, but they always go over, all equipment is provided, all you need to bring are your Wellington boots.

What the event entails:

  1. You will experience an introduction to the bees, learn about the various jobs they perform, understand the structure of a hive, and the roles of the queen, workers, and drones.
  2. Explore how bees communicate, gather nectar, make honey, and pollinate plants. Then you will suit up, you will be given a beekeeper’s suit and gloves. Learn safe behaviour around the bees and how beekeepers protect both people and bees.
  3. We will then go to the hive, where you will join the beekeeper as they open a real hive. You will see all of the frames full of bees up close and personal, you will look for the queen, brood, eggs, larvae, honey stores and the health of the bees.
  4. Hands-on activities. You will get to hold a frame of bees, try using the smoker, and help look for pests and diseases.
  5. We will head back to the office, where we will try the honey, have light refreshments.
  6. We will make a hand-rolled beeswax candle and learn how we process the combs for harvesting and the cleaning process of the wax.
  7. We will have a little chat and learn what threatens bees, discover how to make your own garden more bee-friendly, and understand why pollinators are essential for food systems.
  8. closing and goodie bags.
